Smash Bros. sell Millions.
According to the Nihon Kezai Shimbun, Nintendo expects Super Smash Bros. Melee (called Dairanto Smash Bros. DX in Japan) to sell through one million units by the end of this week. Not only will it mark the first time a GameCube title has reached sales of one million, but it will have done so in just under two months since the title's release on November 21, 2001. With 1.4 million GameCubes sold in Japan through the end of December 2001, it's clear that Super Smash Bros. Melee is the system seller. The software-to-hardware tie ratio for the game is nearly 3:4, which is truly unprecedented. It's no wonder the company felt comfortable not releasing Mario Sunshine in time for launch.
As Japan is a day ahead, we expect the title has likely hit the one million mark already. Congratulations Nintendo, Smash Bros. Melee's blockbuster success is well deserved.
